A Passion for Probiotics

I have developed interests for the use of probiotics to improve human health, primarily via the administration of probiotics in animals and humans to determine their health benefits.

Probiotics are defined as ‘live microorganisms that, when administered in adequate amounts, confer a health benefit on the host". Two of the most researched genera are species of Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium. They are Gram-positive bacteria that are normal inhabitants of the human colon constituting a predominant part of the anaerobic microbiota.

Probiotics have been scientifically documented to exert a variety of heath benefits. My research group focuses on probiotics and their roles to improve intestinal health, intestinal microbial balance, prevention of food allergy, stimulation of the immune system, improvement of constipation, alleviation of atopic dermatitis, gut-brain axis, and the health of women and children. In addition, we also research on the use of probiotics to improve metabolic disorders such as hypercholesterolemia, hypertension, respiratory health, and aging.
